Video of Shorenstein APARC Fellow Thomas Fingar's remarks, "China-U.S. Relations and the International System," from the 2020 Taihe Civilizations Forum on August 24, 2020. A transcript of Fingar's remarks is available here.
Many concerns are being raised about the apparent decoupling underway between the United States and China. Though frictions are increasing, Fingar cautions against assuming that decoupling is inevitable. Both countries currently face widespread domestic challenges, and the foreign policies of each nation will likely be crafted to facilitate the achievement of domestic objectives. This reality will limit the rate and extent of disengagement and could ultimately contribute to a more positive relationship.
