Job Description
The Journal of Korean Studies seeks a temporary editor to oversee all aspects of editorial workflow, manuscript management, and publication production for one of the leading peer-reviewed publications in the field. This is a specialized, highly autonomous role requiring familiarity with academic publishing processes, editorial standards, and scholarly communication. The temporary editor serves as the operational backbone of the journal, coordinating across editors, authors, reviewers, and copy editors to ensure two high-quality issues are published annually.
Key responsibilities
Manage the end-to-end peer review workflow for 40+ manuscripts annually using a manuscript tracking platform
Assign manuscripts to editors and peer reviewers in close coordination with the Editors-in-Chief to ensure timely editorial decisions
Monitor and manage manuscript status at all stages by proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks to keep the publication on schedule
Serve as the primary point of contact for authors, reviewers, and editors regarding submissions, deadlines, revision requirements, and editorial decisions
Serve as the primary liaison between the editorial team and the press, coordinating on production schedules, publication timelines, and the preparation of accepted manuscripts for final publication
Ensure all manuscripts meet the journal’s submission guidelines, ethical publishing standards, citation and referencing conventions, and style requirements
Copyedit accepted manuscripts in preparation for publication, including formatting, consistency, and style review, as well as copyright compliance
Coordinate production of two annual issues (approximately 8-14 articles each), managing timelines from accepted manuscript to final publication-ready file
Maintain editorial records and documentation to support consistency and improvement across the editorial pipeline
Required qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in the humanities, social sciences, Korean studies, or related fields
Some familiarity with academic publishing, editorial workflows, or scholarly communications
Strong copyediting skills and familiarity with academic citation standards (e.g., Chicago Manual Style)
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent workflows with competing deadlines
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work professionally with authors, editors, and reviewers across time zones
Preferred qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in the humanities, social sciences, Korean studies, or a related field
Prior experience as a managing or associate editor at a peer-reviewed academic journal
Familiarity with manuscript management platforms such as ScholarOne, Editorial Manager, or similar systems
Knowledge of or academic background in Korean Studies, East Asian Studies, or related areas
Reading proficiency in Korean is required for working with authors and verifying Korean-language references
Work arrangement
This is a temporary hourly position averaging approximately 19 hours per week, though workload may vary: hours are typically higher in the weeks leading up to issue submission deadlines and lighter during other periods of the publication cycle. The role may be performed on a hybrid basis. Regular weekly meetings with the Editors-in-Chief are required. Given the specialized expertise required and the autonomous nature of the position, compensation is commensurate with professional-level editorial experience.
Suggested Hourly Payrate: $25.00 – $40.00 per hour
