The Great Tohoku, Japan Disaster
Please join us on April 25 and 26 for two evenings devoted to an examination of and conversation about the March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake in northern Honshu, Japan, and the subsequent tsunami and nuclear accident. In talks and panel discussions, experts from the School of Earth Sciences and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies will focus on what happened, the impacts of the events, and what the future holds for Japan and other earthquake- and tsunami-zone regions of the world.

Pamela A. Matson is the Chester Naramore Dean of the Stanford University School of Earth Sciences, Richard and Rhoda Goldman Professor of Environmental Studies at Stanford, and senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment.
Panelists:
Gregory Beroza is the Wayne Loel Professor in the Stanford University School of Earth Sciences and chair of the Department of Geophysics. He works to develop and apply techniques for analyzing seismograms—recordings of seismic waves—in order to understand how earthquakes work and the hazard they pose to engineered structures.
Gregory G. Deierlein is the John A. Blume Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and director of the Blume Earthquake Engineering Center at Stanford. His research focuses on improving limit states design of constructed facilities through the development and application of nonlinear structural analysis methods and performance-based design criteria.
Katherine Marvel is the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) Perry Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford. Her research interests include energy security and nuclear nonproliferation, renewable energy technologies, energy security, nuclear power and nonproliferation, sustainable development, and public understanding of science.

Corporate Affiliates Program fellow
When Makoto Takeuchi came to the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific
Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) as a Corporate Affiliates Program fellow
during the 2004-2005 academic year, he was working as a senior manager with the
Business Development Group of Kansai Electric Power Company, located in Osaka,
Japan. Osaka, part of Japan's Kansai region, is a bustling metropolis and an
important economic and historical center of Japan. Kansai Electric Power
Company is a large energy company that utilizes a combination of energy
sources, including nuclear power, which makes up over 50 percent of its power
supply, as well as thermal (oil, coal, and liquid natural gas) and hydropower.
Takeuchi found the environment of Stanford University, including its situation
in Silicon Valley, stimulating. "I was excited by the diversity and speed of
dynamic innovation in Silicon Valley, and the people who utilize their
knowledge and skills in order to achieve their dreams," he said. Drawing from
this, he carried out a research project exploring complementary strategies for
sustainable corporate growth. He concluded that such sustainable growth comes
from a balance of internal and external resources and short- and long-term
gains, driven by innovation, integration, and interaction.
During his time at Shorenstein APARC, Takeuchi also developed his understanding
of working as a part of a team on a project. "I learned that the success of
projects requires orchestrating the talents and efforts of many people," he
said. He now applies his knowledge of teamwork to the work that he does today,
including the essential skill of communicating with colleagues from different
cultural and professional backgrounds. Being sensitive to the values of others is
crucial when it comes to collaboration, he learned.
Prior to coming to Stanford University, Takeuchi had not yet defined his own idea
of "success." He now measures success by the positive impact that he has on
society, which to him is evidenced by the "smiles on the faces of my customers,
stakeholders, and family." Takeuchi has the opportunity to effect positive
economic and energy development in his new position as a senior energy
specialist with the World Bank's East Asia Sustainable Development Department.
"When I considered how I could make the most of my skills . . . the answer was
to provide clean energy through a sophisticated power system with renewable
energy and to contribute to what people in the region really want," he explained.
In his role with the World Bank, Takeuchi is working toward increasing access
to cleaner energy and laying the foundation for sustainable growth in
developing countries, and, of course, to gain smiles in the process.
For current and future Corporate Affiliates fellows, Takeuchi imparts the
wisdom: "As soon as possible, you should discover the criteria for evaluating
your own success. Then, you should just run toward it!"

Hironori Iwane, "Smart Grid Strategies Concerning Renewable Energies in the United States and Japan"
The topic of Smart Grid has become more and more popular because technologies concerning it are effective for efficiency improvement and renewable energy increase in electric power systems. However, Smart Grid is an ambiguous term and its meanings vary with different audiences. Therefore, it is increasingly difficult to identify what Smart Grid is or understand the potential benefits or concern for future electric power systems. As the result, grasping strategies for future electric power systems is complicated. This research focuses on clarifying the future strategies for electric power systems in ambiguous renewable and Smart Grid circumstances.
Daiju Nakahashi, "Current and Future Trends of the Smart Grid in the U.S. and Japan - A Study of New Business Opportunities"
The Smart Grid is a next generation power grid that controls the supply and demand of electricity by using advanced information and communications technology. The Smart Grid is considered revolutionary in the power industry - just as the Internet was to the IT industry. In recent years, worldwide interest in the Smart Grid has increased due to its close relationship to renewable energy. In particular, the interest in the United States has grown significantly since the Obama administration unveiled its plan to invest heavily in the Smart Grid. Nakahashi's research in the Smart Grid examines current trends in the United States and Japan and analyzes opportunities for new businesses.
Tomohiro Yamaguchi, "Mobile Industry in the U.S. and Japan: The Differences and Direction in Each Country"
With the rise of smartphones, such as the iPhone and Android phone, the mobile internet market is dramatically growing in the United States. In Japan, on the other hand, the closed nature of the market is seen as a problem, which is sometimes called "Galapagos", with the negative connotation of the nature. Yamaguchi considers the difference between both markets, and attempts to answer the questions -"Which market is leading?" and "How much is it leading?" Finally, Yamaguchi will conjecture the direction of the future.

Hironori Iwane
Hironori Iwane is a corporate affiliate visiting fellow at Shorenstein APARC for 2009-10. Prior to joining Shorenstein APARC, he has worked at the Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc. (Kansai) since 2003. He has been responsible for management, technological development and technological investigation for substations. He has been engaged as a specialist in electrical engineering fields for domestic and overseas projects. He obtained his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Kyoto University.
Daiju Nakahashi
Daiju Nakahashi is a corporate affiliate visiting fellow at Shorenstein APARC
for 2009-2010. Prior to joining Shorenstein APARC, he has worked at Sumitomo
Corporation, one of the major trading and investment conglomerates in Japan for
fifteen years. He has been engaged in sales and marketing of IT-related products
and services as well as venture investments and new business developments in the
IT industry. In addition, he has experience to manage one of the affiliated companies
of Sumitomo Corporation as an executive vice president. He graduated from Keio
University with a degree in Commerce and Business."
Tomohiro Yamaguchi
Tomohiro Yamaguchi is a corporate affiliate visiting fellow at Shorenstein APARC for 2009-10. Previously at Sumitomo Corporation in Japan, he was in charge of developing new business in the Mobile & Internet Business Department. In this capacity, he engaged in a startup of a DSL company, one of Sumitomo Corporation's venture businesses. Additionally, he developed and operated new software products such as SaaS for enterprises and Music SNS for consumers. He graduated from Kobe University with a BA in Intercultural Studies.
Update from Tokyo: U.S.-Japan Relations
Ambassador John V. Roos offers his informal off-the-record remarks on current and future U.S. - Japan Relations.
On May 27, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated John V. Roos to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Japan. He was confirmed by the Senate on August 7, 2009, and was sworn in on August 16, 2009. Prior to his appointment as ambassador, Mr. Roos served as Chief Executive Officer at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, a law firm headquartered in Silicon Valley which is known for its representation of technology, life sciences, and growth companies. Mr. Roos had been a partner at the firm since 1988 and also served in a number of other senior leadership roles including the firm's Board of Directors.
Mr. Roos helped lead the firm during the waves of innovation in Silicon Valley, from the growth of software and communications, to the Internet Age and the emergence of biotechnology, to today's focus on clean technology and renewable energy. He was a leader in cultivating the firm's diversity initiatives. Mr. Roos has been active in local government and served on national political campaigns for President Obama, former Vice President Walter Mondale and Senator Bill Bradley, among others.
Mr. Roos grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Lowell High School in 1973 before attending college at Stanford University, from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors and distinction in 1977. He then went on to Stanford Law School, where he was a member of the Stanford Law Review and Order of the Coif, earning his Juris Doctor in 1980.
