Biography
Jian James Ding is a global affiliate visiting scholar at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) for 2023-25. Ding is the Managing Director at GSR Ventures, where he focuses on early-stage companies in the fields of artificial intelligence, big data, IT-related health care, VR/AR, and new media. Prior to joining GSR Ventures, he co-founded AsiaInfo, a company that played an important role in designing and building China's internet infrastructure. From May 1999 to April 2003, he successfully guided AsiaInfo to become the first Chinese high-tech company to launch an IPO on NASDAQ. He currently serves as a Director on AsiaInfo's board. Previously, he held various leadership positions in AsiaInfo, including Chief Executive Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and President. Ding is also the founder of e-China Alliances and serves as an independent board member of Baidu.com. He is a graduate of Peking University, and earned his MS in Information Science from the University of California, Los Angeles. While at APARC, he will be researching how technology will impact international relations and investment.
