Shorenstein APARC alumni convene in Beijing

More than fifty former visiting fellows and scholars, and friends of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center joined faculty for a special evening at Stanford Center at Peking University, part of an inaugural gathering held in Beijing.

For some alumni, it had been nearly 20 years since their time at Stanford. The event provided an opportunity to reconnect with Shorenstein APARC faculty, many of whom helped guide their research and provided mentorship.

Gi-Wook Shin, professor of sociology and director of Shorenstein APARC, welcomed the crowd, underscoring the longstanding ties between Asia and the United States. Since 1982, Shorenstein APARC has coordinated the Corporate Affiliates Program, an initiative that brings professionals from Asia to the United States. Each year, the Program hosts them as visiting fellows. They join a diverse set of visiting scholars, who are welcomed to the university by sponsoring faculty members.

While at the Center, visiting fellows and scholars both address critical questions facing Asia in their research endeavors. Their presence helps facilitate a dynamic learning environment at Shorenstein APARC, where ideas are exchanged and bonds formed.

Shin was joined by Stanford scholars Jean Oi, professor of political science; Takeo Hoshi, professor of finance; and Scott Rozelle, professor of economic development, all who also direct Asia-related programs within the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, among others. Denise Masumoto, manager of corporate relations, Daniel Sneider, associate director for research, and Charlotte Lee, associate director of the China Program were also in attendance.
