Hyun Suk Park

Hyun Suk Park joined the East Asian Languages and Culture department at Stanford in 2025. She specializes in Korean literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with research interests that span literary studies, history, and interdisciplinary approaches to culture. Her current research includes a book project that examines the cultural history of female performers, or kisaeng, in Korea, focusing on the intersections of gender, slavery, and performance. Through this work, Park explores how historical institutions shaped cultural production and social boundaries. Building on these interests, she has recently launched a new long-term research project that investigates cultural responses to climate disasters and major famines in seventeenth-century East Asia, engaging questions from environmental studies and the humanities.

Park received a Phd in Korean and East Asian Literatures from University of Chicago, her MA in Classical Korean Literature and BA in Korean Literature and English from Seoul National University.
