Twenty-four U.S. secondary school teachers gathered at Stanford to learn about Korea's history, culture and society at the Hana-Stanford Conference, co-sponsored by FSI’s Shorenstein APARC and SPICE. The conference – in its third year – aims to make Korean studies accessible to all grade levels.
Trilateral summit to address the North Korea problem

Elimination of Jang Song-taek contradicts usual narrative in North Korea

In this op-ed, Gi-Wook Shin and David Straub discuss North Korea’s puzzling execution of Jang Song-taek and the social, economic, and political problems facing Kim Jong Un’s regime. They suggest that Jang’s execution may be an attempt to consolidate power and to shore-up support within the country. Shin and Straub point out that the revelations made to justify the purge and execution also act to delegitimize the regime by sending confused signals to the international community, in particular to China and South Korea over their recent economic engagement. They propose that the U.S., South Korea, and China may be able to use this as an opportunity to influence Kim and convince him to relinquish North Korea’s nuclear stockpile, among other goals.

David Straub, associate director of Korean Studies Program, joined Ploughshares Fund Executive Director Philip Yun on April 8 for a town hall discussion in San Francisco on the recent North Korean threats. The panel was held at the Commonwealth Club, the nation's oldest and largest public affairs forum, and moderated by Gloria Duffy, the President and CEO of the Commonwealth Club.
David Straub joins Clinton delegation to North Korea to secure release of Current TV journalists

David Straub, associate director of the Korean Studies Program at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, and former director of the State Department's Korea desk, was part of the private delegation led by former president Bill Clinton in early August that secured the release of two Current TV journalists held in North Korea. The two had been arrested on March 17 near the North Korean border with China while reporting on human trafficking for Current TV and sentenced in June to 12 years hard labor.
