Biography

Kanako Tanaka is a global affiliate visiting scholar at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) for 2026-27. Tanaka has nine years of experience as a news reporter at The Asahi Shimbun, a leading national newspaper in Japan, focusing mainly on economic policy and business news. From 2023 to 2024, she covered the semiconductor industry amid rapid, AI-driven change, tracking global trends, corporate strategies, and policy developments. In 2025, she covered Japanese tax policy, reporting on growing public demands for tax cuts. Across her reporting, she strives to deliver timely, in-depth coverage that explores the people and dynamics behind major events. While at APARC, she will research how companies balance profit and the public interest and explore new models of capitalism.
